(Sacramento, CA) The California Senior Legislature (CSL) has announced plans to hold its first 2015 Senior Rally Day on May 6th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the West Lawn of the State Capitol. We see this as an opportunity to show our state legislators that Seniors Care, Seniors Matter; Seniors will not be Ignored, and most of all, Seniors Vote!!!
Make seniors a Priority for 2015 and Beyond, Reinvest in Older Californian Act Programs has been selected as the theme for this event. Several organizations have already registered to have an exhibit and individuals are signing up to attend. Several counties are arranging to bring busses full of seniors to this important event. We have reached out to several legislators to make presentations, as well as community leaders. Exhibit tables are still available and can be reserved at (916) 552-8056. In addition, we have a limited number of T-shirts available.
The CSL has been advocating for seniors around the State for 35 years by authoring legislative proposals that support this population. Examples of recent bills signed into law by the Governor include SB 1018 and SB 33 making financial institutions mandated by law to report suspicious financial abuse. Two other excellent examples include a Bill that would reinstate the Property Tax Deferment Program where counties are allowed to defer property taxes for low income seniors who are no longer living in the home and the property can be sold...preventing homelessness. The other very important and successful piece of legislation is the implementation of the Silver Alert Program. This program uses the existing Amber Alert to notify public and first responders when a senior wanders away. In its first year, this program returned 149 seniors to their families.
The upcoming Senior Rally Day is a major effort by the CSL to bring seniors and the organizations that support them, to the Capitol to provide a strong voice in support of aging issues to our State Legislature.
