Foothill Fitness: Fit after 50 the exercise program for adults, 50 years and older is pleased to announce the re-opening of the Pine Grove site at the Town Hall in Pine Grove. Thanks to some new trainers, let by Pat Houghton, the classes are again meeting. The class meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 10:15 to 11:15. Donation of $1 for the class and $1 for use of the Town Hall is requested for each class. The remodeled Town Hall will be a comfortable and warm place to keep up an exercise regime in the chilly months to come. There is plenty of room so new participants are welcome to join at any time.
Sponsored by the Amador Senior Center, the Foothill Fitness program began in 2004 and has seven sites around Amador County: Ione , Plymouth, New York Fitness, Sutter Creek, Volcano and Pioneer. The program focuses on balance, strengthening and flexibility, qualities essential to remaining independent when living at home. The classes are run by trained volunteers and supervised by Jan Migliaccio, a local physical therapist who has taken special training in order to oversee the safety and effectiveness of the program. Over 500 participants have been a part of the program in the past eight years. The age of members ranges from 50 to a couple of folks who are over 100. The program, which lasts an hour, includes a variety of exercises and strength training with therabands and most exercises can be done while sitting in chair, so wheelchair bound participants are welcome. Individual trainers also bring their own creative variations of the program to the class. The cost is $1-2 per class depending on the site. No one is turned away unless the class is full.
Local physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists and local trainers refer people to these classes for pre and post joint replacement strengthening. The classes are also a warm and friendly way to socialize!
